Some hairstylists hit the high notes on stage as often as they do in the salon. The perfect haircut blends precision, creativity, and flair, much like the artistry of performing in a rock band. These hairstylists-turned-musicians have cut through stereotypes by turning heads both in salons and on stage, rocking both venues.
PT Sevin is a hairstylist at Hudson & Fouquet Salon, located in the heart of the Annapolis Arts District. Sevin, former co-owner of Glow Salon, is also the lead singer of the band East is East, which formed in 1987 and is still performing today. East is East has shared the stage with music legends such as Marshall Crenshaw, the Doobie Brothers, Debbie Harry, and the Psychedelic Furs.
Matt Hudson, co-owner of Hudson & Fouquet Salon, is another member of East is East, originally playing keyboards before transitioning to guitar. Hudson and Sevin’s music and hairstyling collaborations have spanned decades.
Steven Fisher, former co-owner of Glow Salon and Ruby Salon, now styles hair at 20 Ridgely Hair Studio in West Annapolis. Fisher was the keyboard player for Ten Times Big (10XBIG), a band that performed from 1987 to 1991 and opened for acts that included the Smithereens, Violent Femmes, and the Psychedelic Furs. Fisher continues to create electronic music today.
The three of them share a colorful history of music and friendship rooted in Annapolis. Both East is East and Ten Times Big have played memorable gigs at iconic venues such as 9:30 Club, CBGB, and 40 Watt Club. Sevin, Hudson, and Fisher went to beauty school together in the early 1990s, weaving a bond that has spanned over 30 years of styling and stagecraft.
In Annapolis, creativity crosses boundaries, and these hairstylists prove that one can rock both a great haircut and a music-appreciative crowd with the same passion and skill.
